Being a State Officer is one of the highest honors a student can achieve in SkillsUSA Michigan. It can also be one of the most rewarding experiences for a student. If you are considering running for a state office, be sure you are prepared! As a State Officer, you represent the entire state association, therefore; eyes are always on you.

As a potential State Officer, you must be dedicated to SkillsUSA Michigan. Possessing excellent leadership skills such as public speaking, professionalism, teamwork, and responsibility are major priorities.

State Officer Candidate Application Process Timeline

  • Engage with Support Network: Discuss the responsibilities and activities with your parents, advisor, employer, and principal.

    Obtain Necessary Permissions: Ensure you can be absent from school, work, and family activities when needed.

  • Active Membership and Recommendations: Must be an active member and recommended by Chapter Advisor, Parents, Chapter Members, and School Administrators.

    Educational Commitment: Have at least one full year remaining in a career & technical training program and be enrolled at a school with a SkillsUSA chapter.

    Availability for Events: Available to attend various SkillsUSA Michigan functions, including weekends.

    Application and Policy Adherence: Submit candidacy forms by March 1, 2025, adhere to nomination, election, and campaign policy guidelines, and complete all necessary State Officer Candidate forms.

    Conference Participation: Commit to attending specific events during the State Conference.

    Volunteer Commitment: Willing and able to volunteer at the State Conference headquarters.

    SkillsUSA Leadership Knowledge: Must pass a written exam on the SkillsUSA Leadership Handbook.

    Code of Conduct Agreement: Agree to the State Officer Code of Conduct.

  • Read Information and Submit Forms: Tasks and deadlines for reading candidate information, submitting the forms, and ensuring registration for the State Leadership and Skills Conference by March 1, 2025.

    Candidate Signature Packet: Download, complete, and submit with all required signatures by March 1, 2025.

    Virtual Interview and Problematic Question Prompt: Participate in an interview with state office staff in March 2025. and prepare a response for the SLSC.

    Attend the State Leadership and Skills Conference: Engage with voting delegates and present your speech from April 11-13, 2025, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

    Elected officers will be announced on Sunday morning at the Awards Ceremony.

    • Participate in the CTSO State Officer Workshop – May 2025 (3 days)

    • Participate in the Summer State Officer meeting – August 2025 (3 days)

    • Participate in the Washington Leadership Training Institute – September 2025 (5 days), Washington, D.C.

    • Participate in the Fall Leadership Conference – Fall 2025 (2 days)

    • Participate in the State Officer Planning meeting – January 2026 (3 days)

    • Preside at the SkillsUSA Michigan State Leadership & Skills Conference – April 2026 (5 days), Grand Rapids, Michigan

    • Speak when necessary for SkillsUSA Michigan at social, educational, and civic events

    • Attend State Officer In-person and virtual meetings when scheduled during the school year

    • Be absent from school from time to time to conduct business on behalf of SkillsUSA Michigan

    • Excuse yourself from work on occasion to perform officer responsibilities

    • Represent SkillsUSA Michigan in official dress
